What is Background Removal?

Background removal is not a new concept. There are many photographers, like myself, who do background removal for their own business. But before you start, you need to understand a few things about this process.  There are three main factors that will affect how easy or hard this is for you. These are:  1. How Many Photos Do You Have to Remove?  The more images you have to remove from a background, the more time it will take for you to do it.  In a perfect world, we’d remove all of our backgrounds so that we could then replace them with brand new photos. However, we have a lot of photos and we need a solution that’s scalable and cost-effective. That’s why we need to find a solution that works with a limited number of photos and that will give us a reasonable time frame to complete the job.

What Will I Need?

Before we begin, you’ll need some following items:  A reference photo.  A non-destructive, free tool such as Photoshop.  A clean copy of the image or a known clean copy if your reference photo is not available.  Here’s a screenshot of some the editing tools in Photoshop:  Note: The YouTube version does not include the Tools or Brush panels.  The Basics of Background Removal  There are many different methods of removing the background from an image, and these methods are useful for different reasons. However, there are two main methods of removing the background:  Skewing: The classic method of removing the background is the classic “shape-shift” method.  If you want to see an example of how this works, check out this example.

Is This the Right Kind of Photo for Background Removal?

There are a lot of photos out there that don’t really need to be used for backgrounds, but you don’t want to use them as backgrounds either. You may not like some of the colors that the background of the photo has chosen. One of the best ways to use these photos is to make background patterns or backgrounds, as seen in this image:  Notice that the colors of the wall, roof and the lawn are all in the same light color. To make this picture background free, you must use something darker. Something to make the photo look more faded. Something to make the walls darker. Something that will make everything pop out of the background.  One of the best ways to achieve this look is with a dark color. This photo is a great example of what we’re talking about.

How Do You Remove a Background?

There are two primary ways that you can remove a background from a photo. This means that you’ll need to understand what each of them entails so that you can do them correctly.  The first technique is to simply choose a new, contrasting background. You can do this either by using the program’s main menu, going to Edit > Fill & Paint Overlay, or by adjusting the Scratch and Blur options in the Appearance tab.  In addition to the picture of the person or object you wish to add or remove, you may also need the person’s or object’s name or some other information that you want to put into the new background.

What Should I Keep in Mind When Removing Backgrounds?

There are a few factors that you should keep in mind when removing backgrounds.  First, the background should be important to you. If it isn’t important to you, then this is something you won’t want to do.  Second, you have to be conscious of how to handle the foreground/foreground structure of a photo. In many cases, a photo may have a strong foreground element, but not necessarily. But you want to be sure that you’re removing the background that doesn’t actually need to be there. This usually means that you’re removing the background of a photo that has too much background in it.  Lastly, you have to be careful that you aren’t removing something that’s critical to your photo’s composition.
